Turtles will arrive at Playa Ixtapilla during the above dates, based on the egg-laying cycles of the black and gulf turtle species. Usually the first day has the heaviest activity, with more than 3,000 turtles coming to shore to deposit their eggs.

By the end of the last "wave," beginning around Sept. 2, 2001, more than 150,000 eggs were harvested and placed in the turtle sanctuary in this one area. There were many more nests (an estimated 1,000), according to the conservationists on the site, where the eggs were not harvested.

The eggs from the first "wave" of turtles are expected to hatch beginning mid-October, and will continue through the end of October. It is impossible to determine exactly when each wave of turtles will arrive and when the eggs will hatch.
